There are many benefits of ballet training as an adult. Since starting ballet as an adult, I have learned a lot about myself and my body’s capability. Has anyone else pushed out small humans and still trying to learn ballet? ?♀️ It’s not easy but so worth it. I wanted to learn some of the benefits of practicing ballet as an adult and I learned SO MUCH when researching. Here is a list of 11 benefits that you may not have known and that I have already noticed in myself!

Learning ballet as an adult can be scary, weird feeling, and very overwhelming. But did you know there are tons of benefits to picking up this hobby? Adult ballet classes not only improve your body physically but also benefit your brain! Let’s dive into each benefit of starting ballet as an adult beginner.

Physical Benefits of Adult Ballet
There is a HUGE range of physical benefits of taking ballet classes. By taking part in daily or consistent exercise you will start to improve your quality of life now and in the future. Ballet is unique in that it encompasses many different parts of your body. Your muscles are working overtime to make these very hard movements look effortless.

One of the very obvious benefits of ballet is improving your muscle strength. It is a huge effort to be able to stand upright while in a turned-out position. Also, I want to mention the real secret burner is holding your arms in the second position at the barre. It always gets me. That’s why you always see ballerinas with super ripped arms.
Flexibility can start to occur naturally as your body loosens up and starts to get more in “ballet mode”. Most of the exercises are designed to gradually increase flexibility throughout your ballet training. As an adult, I highly recommend adding in a quick yoga routine throughout your week and tracking your progress using goals. By cross-training with yoga, you will be able to speed up your flexibility. Weekly beginner adult ballet classes will help improve your endurance in all aspects of your life! You will find yourself being able to walk farther and enjoying a higher quality of life.
Does anyone else still get their left and right confused? Online adult ballet can help with this too! I will be honest, it can be VERY overwhelming in the beginning learning to coordinate your limbs into some semblance of grace. But with practice and time, you will be very confident in the difference between your left foot and right foot. ?
In your first adult ballet class, you may be very aware that you lack balance. Core strength is a big component in finding your balance and pretty much everything in ballet is working out your core even if you don’t realize it! From leg lifts, postural control, center, and floor work will all help train your core to be stronger and in turn, your balance.
The old adage, “if you don’t use it, you lose it”, is true! The older we get the more important it is to maintain our balance so we can avoid falls.
Ballet is one of the best exercises to improve your posture! This is one of my favorite benefits of ballet training. All the movements with the arms and exercises require upright posture which can feel so good after sitting at a desk all day. This will help you feel great in the short term and long term!

Mental Benefits of Adult Ballet
Ballet is unique in that it offers a wide range of benefits outside of just weight loss and being able to touch your toes. The older you get the more aware you become of your mental health state. Taking time to keep your brain healthy and emotions regulated is important to be a functioning adult in society. Dancing can be the stress relief that you have been looking for!
Adult ballet classes follow a certain flow. You start with plies and work up into big movements like grand battements by the end of barre. Because the flow of the exercises is typically the same, this allows your brain to turn off and concentrate on the movements you are doing. You’re not thinking about your to-do list or what your kids did this morning, you are just aware of your body and how it feels. Paired with beautiful music, you can truly relax and find calm amidst all the movement.
This will start to reflect in your daily life. Taking a breath and becoming aware of your body is a great way to find peace during stressful situations.
Your very first adult ballet class can be very scary. I know I felt self-conscious, judged by other students, and terrified that I made the wrong decision to pursue ballet as an adult. I want to let you know that you are not alone and more likely everyone else in the class is thinking the same thing. Overcoming these fears and self-limiting doubts helped me and can help you become much more confident as a dancer and in everyday life. Ballet is not only a very physical sport but it also is an art form! Being able to create something beautiful with your body with music is empowering. It will help you become more in intune with your body and the emotions that you are feeling in the moment. This benefit of adult ballet is something that is often overlooked but can be a game-changer! It’s okay to be new at something and it’s okay to love doing something even if you aren’t the best.
I mentioned this a little bit during the coordination section but it’s worth repeating. Ballet requires both the left side and right side of the brain to work together which can improve memory and focus, and even reduce the risk of dementia. I don’t know about you, but sign me up!!
Anyone who has taken one ballet class will tell you how hard it is. Trying to figure out how to point your toes, keep your arms up, abs engaged, posture and so many other things are HARD! But over time your body will learn how to coordinate all this movement and improve your brain health.
Pursuing something you’re passionate about!
Last but not least is being able to pursue something that you love. As a child, I wanted nothing more than to be a professional ballerina, but life circumstances did not allow me to pursue that dream. Now coming back as a 26-year-old mother, I finally am in a place where I can pursue this passion of mine. It’s never too late to start something new. I’m definitely not trying to be professional, but being able to take class and dance has brought me so much joy!
Having a hobby that you love will help you find happiness and reduce depression.
