What is world ballet day?
Get excited! World Ballet Day is on October 19th this year. This is an all-day celebration of dance. You get to watch almost 50 different ballet companies as they take class, rehearsal, interviews, and behind scenes look at upcoming performances.
You can stream this all for FREE! Here is the link to the World Ballet Day website. The website offers links to each individual company’s YouTube channel to watch it live.
This is a fun, and amazing opportunity to watch professional dancers as they create beautiful art.
Social Media Challenge
World Ballet Day is also having a social media challenge called Jump For Joy! You can win the chance to be featured during the live event. All you have to do is post a video of you jumping with the hashtags #worldballetday.
You can watch more here, as Marcelino Sambé, a Royal Ballet principal, explains the details of the challenge.
Where can I watch it?
You can watch the live streams by accessing the ballet companies streaming platform. Most are on YouTube, but some are on Facebook and Instagram. Here is a list of the individual channels:
- Bolshoi Theatre
- Bayerisches Staatsballett
- Ballet De Barcelona
- Dutch National Ballet
- Estonia National Ballet
- Den Norske Opera & Ballett
- Ooppera & Baletti
- CP
- Perm Opera Ballet Theatre
- Polski Balet Narodowy
What’s the schedule?
The schedule can be very overwhelming when dealing with different time zones! I created a Google calendar schedule for all the events in world ballet day. The great thing about Google calendar is it automatically adjusts to the timezone that you live in.
That way no matter where you are in the world, you can pick your favorite ballet companies to watch without stressing about time zones.
What do I recommend watching?
I think the main criteria for watching is your time availability. I probably won’t be watching the Singapore Dance Theatre because that’s at 1 am EST. But there are some I will make sure to watch:
- Royal Opera House
- Hong Kong Ballet
- Birmingham Royal Ballet
- Royal Academy of Dance
- American Ballet Theatre
- Boston Ballet
- Joburg Ballet
